The safety of residents is a top priority – our underpasses are no exception.
In response to growing concerns from residents about the safety of key underpasses and alleyways, I’ve been working hard with the Council, Transport for London (TFL), and residents to make a change. From increased lighting to cutting back overgrown leaves, these improvements are about more than just infrastructure, they’re about creating safer environments, especially for women and girls, and all those who use these spaces.
One of the areas that has been of particular concern is The Causeway near East Finchley Station. Residents reached out with worries about safety in this underpass, especially following a deeply concerning attack on a woman, which led to the installation of CCTV cameras. However, the recent decision to remove the CCTV prompted more worry. We will be advocating for a permanent fixture to be installed.
The Council has agreed to cut back the overgrown leaves along The Causeway. This change will make the underpass more open and visible, allowing more natural light to flood into the area. This simple yet effective change is an important step in ensuring a safer environment for everyone, particularly women and girls who are often affected by concerns about personal safety in poorly lit, hidden spaces on their way home.
We will continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that further improvements are made where necessary and safety is never compromised.
Moving on to the underpass at Strawberry Vale, we’ve been in constant communication with the Council and TFL. This underpass has long been a point for safety concerns, with many residents noting that the steps are bad and that the area feels unsafe.
I’m pleased to report that our persistent advocacy has paid off. Together with residents, we’ve pushed for the replacement of the poor conditioned steps and have called for better lighting and maintenance of the area. With support from both the Council and TFL, we’re hopeful that this underpass will soon see improvements that make it safer and more accessible for everyone. This isn’t just about improving infrastructure, it’s about reinstalling a community where people feel safe walking to and from work, school, and shops, no matter the time.
Another successful change is the ongoing work at the Manor Park Road underpass. TFL has confirmed that they are responsible for the structural safety of the underpass, while the Borough of Barnet handles cleanliness. However, the teamwork between residents, TFL, and the Council has resulted in a comprehensive plan to improve this underpass.
Residents have been so involved in pushing for changes that will not only make the underpass safer but also more accessible. Plans to get additional lighting, clean the area, and paint the walls are moving forward, thanks to the hard work and effort of the community. This is a win for residents and a win for a safer and more welcoming environment for everyone in the area.
